Winter can be one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year! The shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures may also bring on a bit of cabin fever. The Gardner School has created a list of things your family can do to get out of the house and enjoy the winter season to the fullest!

COSI

Since opening in 1964, COSI (Center of Science and Industry) has inspired interest in STEM topics by offering a fun, hands-on learning style. The 320,000-square-foot facility is packed with over 300 interactive experiences and nine galleries. COSI’s Planetarium is the largest in Ohio and gives you incredible access to our universe. Your family can also enjoy special extended hours on several days in December.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The zoo is huge! In fact, it’s one of the largest in the United States and boasts an extensive list of animal exhibits. The zoo hosts special events, like Wildlights and a sensory-friendly Santa Experience during the holiday season, so be sure to check out the events page on its website. 

In addition, the zoo also has an aquarium located entirely indoors, which makes it a great place to visit during cold winter months.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

No matter the season, there is always so much to see and do at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The indoor and outdoor facility spans 13 acres and is situated two miles from downtown Columbus. Be sure to visit during Holiday Blooms and Conservatory Aglow to get into the holiday spirit, and check out the full events schedule on their website for more activities to enjoy during the holiday season!

Columbus Museum of Art

Known for its diverse collection of artwork, engaging exhibitions, and educational programs, the Columbus Museum of Art caters to visitors of all ages. Be sure to visit the events and program page on the museum’s website for unique and fun experiences, including Winter Art Breaks, that your family is sure to enjoy. 

Fun in the Snow at Mad River Mountain

Hit the slopes at Mad River Mountain for a day of skiing, snowboarding, or tubing. Located just 45 minutes from Columbus, this is a popular destination for many families. Pack your own lunch or take a break and refuel at one of the dining options on the mountain.

Explore Metro Parks

Bundle up and explore one of the 20 Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks. You can observe winter wildlife, find a good sledding hill, or just enjoy a walk through nature. It doesn’t cost a dime to enjoy the beauty of Ohio in the winter, even if it does get a little chilly! 

Take in a Play at Short North Stage

Attending a live theater performance can be a wonderful way to spend an evening with your family. The Short North Stage offers a variety of productions — from musicals to comedies and everything in between! A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, and ELF in Concert are just a few of the holiday productions you might see.
