The Gardner School is dedicated to being a partner in your child’s education, recognizing the importance of extending learning and exploration beyond our classrooms. That’s why we’ve put together an exclusive guide to free attractions, events, and activities in Louisville designed with preschoolers in mind. Whether you’re already part of The Gardner School community or thinking about joining us, we hope this guide helps your family try new experiences and create lasting memories right here in our beautiful city.
Blackacre Nature Preserve
A 280-acre nature preserve featuring an 18th-century homestead and Louisville’s largest community garden, Blackacre offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. The conservancy includes almost 300 acres and miles of trails to enjoy. While you’re there, check out the Waterfall Trail, the observation deck of Dragonfly Pond, and one of the oldest white oak trees in Kentucky (est. 1696).
Speed Art Museum
With programs designed for preschoolers and their families, interactive exhibits, and outdoor spaces, the Speed Art Museum is the perfect place to ignite your little one’s curiosity and creativity. The museum offers free admission every Sunday and on the 1st Thursday evening of each month (excluding the 1st Thursday of May and July 2024.)

Farmers Markets
Whether you’re looking for some fresh produce or just want to enjoy some live entertainment, farmers markets are a wonderful gathering place for families with little ones. In Louisville, these markets aren’t just for Saturdays. You can find many across the city that operate throughout the week! A few of our favorites include the Douglass Loop Farmers Market and St. Mathews Farmers Market. Check out this list of markets to find one in your neighborhood.
Schimpff’s Confectionery
This candy shop has been serving up sweets to the Louisville area since the 1850s. Located just across the river from Louisville, Schimpff’s Confectionery offers free tours of the Candy Kitchen and the Candy Museum. The candy demonstration area, chocolate dipping room, and museum are always open for viewing during store hours, but booking a tour in advance will ensure you get to witness the actual candy-making process!

Live Concerts and Festivals
Pack a picnic and head out to enjoy some free live music! Louisville offers a variety of free events, such as the Summer Concerts in the Park every Thursday and Waterfront Wednesday on the Big Four Lawn in Louisville’s Waterfront Park. Norton Commons is another spot to check out live music, and it also hosts family-friendly art festivals. Check out the Norton Commons event calendar to learn more.
Louisville Public Library (multiple locations)
Public libraries serve as great resources for families looking to have some fun for free. The Louisville Public Library and its branch locations offer a variety of educational activities, including craft programs, storytime hours, and even a fun challenge for parents called “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” which offers prizes to families when they reach a reading milestone!
