The unlimited number of outdoor, and often free, activities in Northern Virginia and around D.C. is one of the things families love most about living in the area. When the sun is shining and the birds are singing, children want to get outside and play and explore. We asked parents at The Gardner School of Herndon for their favorite kid-friendly outdoor activities, and they definitely delivered. If you’re looking for a way to get out and enjoy the Northern Virginia/D.C. area with family, here is a list of favorites from local parents:

Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conversation Biology Institute

If you’re in or around the D.C. area, this spot is truly a must-see. The Smithsonian National Zoo houses nearly 1,800 animals from 360 different species. From the Andean Bear to the Yellow Spotted Amazon River Turtle, you will find an animal or exhibit for every child, no matter their age or interest. Of special interest are the American Bison, the panda bears, the elephant trails, and a birdhouse that teaches children about the migratory patterns of the over 100 species of birds who will live there. Your child will love the long walk through the park, as there is a new creature to discover around every corner. For an added bonus, check out the Small Mammal Sing-Along, a special show just for children that features special simian guests!

Frying Pan Farm Park

Frying Pan Farm Park has preserved what life was like on a working farm in the early to mid-20th century, and DC children love learning about a more rural existence. The park’s Fall Carnival and Harvest Days are a great opportunity to watch the beautiful leaves change color, watch the fall crops come in, peel apples and load the apple cider press, and milk a goat or a cow. Children will learn how farms give us food and better understand what farming processes looked like before mechanized technology. Just don’t miss a wagon ride or a spin around the carousel at the end of the day. No visit to the park is complete without it!

Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole

During the warmer seasons, children love this themed water park with a giant mountain in the middle that holds a boarded-up mine shaft with tunnels. Watch them splash down slides or float on the lazy river for an afternoon of unforgettable fun. It has activities and spaces for all ages. Toddlers can enjoy splashing in Tenderfoot Pond, while older children will love swinging and climbing in Boomtown, a water playground with levels of adventure. The park has many flotation devices for beginning swimmers, so everyone can feel safe and confident in the water.

Bready Park

If you’re looking for a great place to visit closer to home, Bready Park is a terrific option. The park boasts a picnic shelter for a family gathering or birthday party, as well as large sports fields where you and your little one can grab your gloves and play catch, or kick around a soccer ball. Children will especially love the large playground that features large and windy climbing structures, winding plastic tunnels and bridges, slides, monkey bars, and more. It’s a great place to let children roam, explore and play, especially on a beautiful day when everyone wants to soak in the sun.

Herndon Caboose

Local families and visiting children love a trip to the Herndon Caboose in the downtown area. Children will love seeing a real piece of American history, as the caboose dates all the way back to the 1940s. The caboose is 100% free for children to climb onto, look inside, and pretend to be a conductor as they explore every square inch of this modern relic. All aboard! Choo choo!
